Despite the fact that David Ross left Jon Lester in the game a bit long in the sixth inning, Chicago managed to outlast Pittsburgh 8-7 in 11 innings. The teams had to wait out a lengthy rain delay in the eighth inning and played through some heavy rains in the ninth.
Lester had surrendered just one run through five innings but ran out of gas and gave up hit after hit in the sixth. This is one of the first times I can recall that Ross potentially let a former relationship effect his decision making.
All’s well that ends well though as new Cub lefty Josh Osich and not as new closer Jeremy Jeffress did some great relief work in the ninth, tenth, and eleventh innings.
