Cubs sign Rex Brothers to one-year deal

The Chicago Cubs have agreed to terms with left-handed reliever Rex Brothers on a one-year deal, avoiding arbitration, the team announced Wednesday. The deal is for $1.42 million, according to a source familiar with the contract.

Brothers, 27, was acquired in a trade with the Colorado Rockies last month and was one of nine Cubs players eligible for arbitration. Wednesday night is the deadline for those players to be tendered a contract for 2016. Teams can still negotiate with players and avoid arbitration even after tendering contracts. The Cubs are expected to retain their remaining arbitration-eligible players including Jake Arrieta, Pedro Strop, Hector Rondon, Travis Wood, Clayton Richard, Justin Grimm, Ryan Cook and Chris Coghlan.
