The Cubs, who have used five backup catchers this year with little luck, today signed catcher Robinson Chirinos to a one-year major league contract.
Chirinos, who will wear uniform number 29, has been added to the active roster and is available for tonight’s 7:05 p.m. CT game against the Phillies at Wrigley Field. To make room on the roster for Chirinos, catcher Taylor Gushue has been designated for assignment.
Chirinos, who is 37, was originally signed by the Cubs in 2000 out of Venezuela, was traded to the Rays as part of the Matt Garza deal in January 2011.
