The Cubs announced Sunday that they have granted utilityman Derek Dietrich his release so that he can pursue other MLB opportunities. It initially appeared as though the former Marlin and Red might be able to provide the Cubs with a little depth at second base, particularly with Daniel Descalso back on the IL, but Nico Hoerner and Jason Kipnis have proved a potent combination at the keystone thus far.
Per Cubs, Derek Dietrich was granted his release to pursue an MLB opportunity. Chicago’s 60-man pool has been trimmed to 59 players.

While it’s too bad Dietrich won’t get the chance to rock his unbuttoned Cubs jersey at Wrigley, at least we can all go back to hating him again.
