Let’s start with the premise that an owner of a professional sports franchise should be willing to do whatever it takes, within reason, to help build a winner. That’s realistic, right?
Well, there’s a problem with that idea as it relates to the Cubs. Team chairman Tom Ricketts’ definition of “whatever it takes’’ is so narrow a stick figure couldn’t fit through it. He has an opportunity to make a breakthrough in the non-existent negotiations with free agent Cody Bellinger.
