Nationals starter DJ Herz was cruising through four innings against his former club. There was an extra oomph in his gait after he retired the side in the first inning.

And for most of Saturday’s start, Herz silenced a Cubs offense that has been potent lately. But then came the fifth inning. Third baseman Isaac Paredes led off the inning with a single down the third-base line, followed by a walk by first baseman Michael Busch and a single by second baseman Nico Hoerner.
