Cubs notebook: Mike Montgomery defends Willson Contreras on game-ending wild pitch

MILWAUKEE – During Friday night’s game, an eventual 11-inning, 2-1 loss to the Milwaukee Brewers that ended on a run-scoring wild pitch from Mike Montgomery, CSN broadcaster Jim Deshaies commented on catcher Willson Contreras’ “aggressive” setup. Contreras was bouncing so far outside prior to delivery that he was crouching essentially behind the opposite batter’s box to receive the pitch.

Deshaies said for him, as a former pitcher, that would be a distraction. Soon after he made the comment, with the right-handed Manny Piña down 0-2, Contreras bounced to his far right and Montgomery pulled a changeup towards the middle of the plate that got past Contreras and allowed the winning run to score.
