Welcome back to Cubs Historical Heroes and Goats: 2003 edition. It’s been a while since we checked in, so let’s recap where we were. When last we looked back, the Cubs had just completed eight games out of a scheduled nine game homestand. The Sunday game against the Cardinals had been rained out after four innings. The Cardinals lost utility man Eli Marrero in the partial game. The Cubs? They split the eight games. A disappointing result after they had compiled 16 wins in their first 28 games. Still, even with the disappointing homestand, a team that lost 95 wins in 2002 was 20-16 and a 1½-game lead in the division.
