Cubs avoid worst-case scenario as Jason Heyward will not be placed on DL

SAN FRANCISCO - The Cubs appear to have avoided a worst-case scenario with Jason Heyward, who almost paid the price for his spectacular maximum-effort catch on Friday night at AT&T Park.

The Cubs described Heyward's injury as a contusion on his right side in the rib area, an MRI apparently revealing not as much damage as initially feared. The Cubs framed it as something that won't force Heyward onto the disabled list, placing the timeline around three or five days of rest.

With Heyward sidelined, the Cubs activated outfielder Matt Szczur before Saturday's game against the San Francisco Giants and designated reliever Neil Ramirez for assignment.
