The Cubs summoned bullpen reinforcements from Triple-A Iowa for Wednesday’s game, having had almost all their relievers throw a lot of pitches over the last few games, including two extra-inning games in Arizona.
That was not only a smart thing to do, it paid off in the rubber game of this series. Hayden Wesneski, making his MLB season debut, shut the Diamondbacks down in a critical situation and went on to throw four brilliant innings, helping lead the Cubs to a 5-3 win. The victory gave the Cubs the series win in Arizona, as well as a winning West Coast road trip, five wins to four losses.
