Oh, what a week it was for the Cubs and their fans. On Monday night, they raised the first three World Championship flags in Wrigley Field history. With an assist from Hall of Famers Ryne Sandberg and Fergie Jenkins, they hoisted banners to honor the 1907 and 1908 World Series-winning Cubs. Those titles are so ancient they pre-date Wrigley itself.
Then, the coolest of all the Cubs’ Hall of Famers, Billy Williams, was given the honor raising the 2016 National League Pennant. It’s why they call it the pennant, after all. Then, the 20 Cubs on this year’s roster who were on the team last year (plus, for some reason, Koji Uehara) were in the center field bleachers to take turns pulling the cord to raise the big one, the 2016 World Series Championship banner.
