Several times during the playoffs this year, Cubs manager Joe Maddon noted that his team had so many useful players that they had to leave some of them off the roster each round. That’s a great problem to have, and one that’s easy to start taking for granted.
So let’s take a look back at the Cubs not-so-distant past for some perspective. Because, while the Cubs won a World Series in only the fifth year of Theo Epstein’s rebuild, there were some pretty dark days, roster-wise, at the beginning.
For lack of a better name, let’s call them the Jason Berken All-Stars.
