The day started with the Cubs putting up six runs before starter Mike Montgomery could even get comfortable in the dugout. Led by Mark Zagunis and David Bote, the offense was simply too much for the Padres’ staff, which went through seven pitchers before the 7th inning.
Zagunis, who led off the game and played right field, reached base four times — twice via walk — while Bote reached as many times strictly from making contact. The other great outburst came from Cristhian Adames, who may be contributing to the big league team sooner rather than later. He added three hits and drove in five runs.
