The Chicago Cubs got what they were hoping for out of their starter Jake Arrieta. He pitched six solid innings, allowing just one run on a solo home run to Ryan Schimpf. But in the end, that wasn’t good enough. Arrieta didn’t factor in the decision as Koji Uehara allowed a run in the bottom of the eighth that gave the Padres the 2-1 victory. It was an infield single from Javier Baez that helped push across the Cubs lone run of the game.
The Cubs finished the road trip 3-for-40 with runners in scoring position–a dead giveaway of why they struggled mightily on the West Coast swing.
