DENVER – Tyler Chatwood was one of the biggest reasons the Cubs had almost nothing left in the payroll budget to make roster additions last winter.
Don’t look now, but the oft-maligned right-hander is starting to look like a reason they might have financial flexibility next winter – and not because of any potential trade value.
Chatwood has solved enough of his control problems from a year ago, and performed well enough in a reduced role this year, that he could be a viable part of the starting rotation mix for next year.
“He’s putting himself in position to be considered for all that stuff,” manager Joe Maddon said.
