The Cubs finished the first half of the 2024 schedule, 81 games, with a 37-44 record. That’s ... not very good. (And note that some consider the “first half” all the games before the All-Star break, which this year for the Cubs will be 98 games, barring any further rainouts. That’s 60.5 percent of the schedule, which is quite a bit more than half.)
We know what the issues are here: A bullpen that’s constantly blowing late-inning leads, and an offense where just about everyone on the team is 50 to 100 OPS points below his career norm.
