The dapper fellow depicted at the top of this post is obviously not a ballplayer.

Nevertheless, he’s one of the most significant figures in Chicago Cubs history.

That’s Charles “Lucky Charlie” Weeghman, who had been the owner of the Federal League’s Chicago Whales. When the league folded after 1915, a settlement between its owners and the owners of the existing National and American League teams allowed two Federal League owners to buy into existing clubs.
