The Cubs had just completed a run of four NL pennants in five years in 1910, and remained in contention for most of 1911, in first place as late as Aug. 23.

From then till season’s end they went 27-21 and won 92 games, a good year. But the Giants went on a 32-11 run and the Cubs finished a distant second.
