A few thoughts about that weird ‘intentional walk’ in Sunday’s Cubs/Marlins game

Here’s the situation. The Cubs are trailing the Marlins 3-1 in the top of the eighth inning Sunday in Miami. The Marlins have runners on second and third with nobody out.

The Cubs opt to intentionally pass Jesús Sánchez.

Here’s what happened [VIDEO].

Sánchez was removed from the game for pinch-runner Cristian Pache. But! Sánchez never touched first base, and so the Cubs opted for an appeal play at first base. Pache, who had taken the position at first base, was ruled out.

Originally, it was ruled an intentional walk, with Pache out pitcher to first base.
