The Chicago Cubs made the first real splash of the free agency signing period on Tuesday night when they signed ace pitcher Jon Lester to a six-year, $155 million deal, immediately making them a potential playoff contender. However, the Cubs aren't done. Here's the latest rumors on the other moves Chicago might make:
JONNY GOMES
Gomes has become the Cubs' top target after signing Lester. They're looking for more left-handed power hitting, and they think Gomes is the best one available. He has the leadership and playoff experience the Cubs are looking for.
JUSTIN UPTON
The Braves have made everyone on their roster available for a trade, making Upton an option for the Cubs in their pursuit of a power-hitting outfielder, according to David O'Brien of the Atlanta Journal-Constitution. Upton is one of the few elite options available, but they aren't sure if he'll be too pricey for them.
OTHER NOTES
After the Lester signing, there are mixed reviews about what it means for the Cubs. Everyone thinks it's a slam dunk, but Rob Neyer of FOX Sports says it doesn't make them a contender in 2015. On the flip side, Jeff Sullivan of Fangraphs thinks the signing will put them in the playoffs.
