Tony La Russa: “Tough guy, good guy” Joe McEwing would be great manager

Over his decades in Major League Baseball, Hall of Fame Tony La Russa has acquired a robust collection of mementos from players he has managed — Yadier Molina’s chest protector, Mike Matheny’s glove, items from Albert Pujols and Mark McGwire and the late Darryl Kile.
That coterie of items, which signifies fond memories of future Hall of Famers and 20-game winners and some of the game’s most prolific hitters, also includes a gift from a plucky, undersized utility player with a lifetime .251 batting average.
“I’ve got Joe McEwing’s spikes,” La Russa told The Athletic when reached by phone on Monday.
