LOS ANGELES — On Tuesday morning, I went to the Central District Courthouse and took the elevator up to Courtroom 1600 for the final day of a $21.5 million civil rape trial: Jane Doe vs. Derrick Rose.
Rose was once Chicago’s favorite son, a hometown hero who couldn’t do anything wrong. Years of injuries atrophied his reputation. This case, which was announced last summer, was mostly ignored last season without criminal charges and a civil trial scheduled so far away.
No Chicago reporters have covered the trial on a regular basis, while media in New York, Los Angeles and Deadspin have carried the media’s load.
