Anthony Davis kicked off the NBA's free agency period with a bang Tuesday evening.
Minutes after teams were allowed to begin negotiating with free agents at 11:01 p.m. CT, Yahoo Sports' Adrian Wojnarowski reported that the 22-year-old Davis and the New Orleans Pelicans had agreed to a maximum five-year extension that could be worth $145 million. It's the largest contract in NBA history, surpassing the $136 million extension Kobe Bryant signed in 2004.
With the salary cap set to increase more than $20 million in 2016-17, Davis could qualify for an exception in which he would obtain 30 percent of the Pelicans' salary cap if he starts in the All-Star Game or is named to an All-NBA team next season.
