When the NHL instituted expanded video review in the 2015-16 season to help combat errors such as the Matt Duchene offside, and the inconsistency with goaltender interference, most thought there would be clarity.
Most would be wrong.
Take a scroll through Twitter or watch the highlights on most nights and one common theme arises: Can anyone, with absolute certainty, explain what is and is not goaltender interference?
Most fans would say they firmly grasp what offside is, what icing is, and what most penalties are (playoffs aside). I can't think of a rule that has more confusion and ambiguity to it than goaltender interference.
