GLENDALE, Ariz. — If you need a defining image to understand the nature and purpose of instructional league for the rebuilding White Sox, you could do a lot worse than manager Rick Renteria sitting alongside hitting coach Todd Steverson and general manager Rick Hahn, vigorously applauding a farmhand shortstop (the lineup card says it was Laz Rivera) making a heads-up play to gun down a runner at home plate after making a diving stop in the hole.
After taking in Game 1 of Dodgers-Diamondbacks with his wife and family, Renteria told them he was done sitting through playoff games until he manages one for the White Sox.
