Source: Matheson Iacopelli leaving school early to sign with Blackhawks

Matheson Iacopelli will sign an entry-level contract with the Blackhawks and forego his final two seasons at Western Michigan University, a source confirmed on Monday.

ESPN’s John Buccigross first reported the news.

Iacopelli, a Blackhawks’ third-round pick in 2014, is coming off a breakout college season. After scoring just one goal as a freshman, he had 20 goals and 16 assists in 40 games this season. Western Michigan’s season ended in the NCAA tournament on Friday.

Blackhawks assistant general manager Norm Maciver said last week he was impressed by Iacopelli’s season.

“Where he was in year one and where he is this year, he’s certainly leaps and bounds of where he was last year,” Maciver said.
