Mark Kelley scouts every player the Chicago Blackhawks draft thoroughly.
Ryan Hartman just happened to be scouted more than most because of who he played for and where Kelley lived. Hartman played for USA Hockey’s National Team Development Program in Ann Arbor, Michigan and then went on to play for the OHL’s Plymouth Whalers in Plymouth, Michigan. Both places are just a short drive from Kelley’s home.
So when the Blackhawks were deciding who to select with the 30th overall pick in the 2013 NHL Draft, Kelley didn’t hesitate when he recommended Hartman. Kelley had seen Hartman enough to know what the Blackhawks were getting.
