Leaving college early proving to be right choice for Blackhawks’ Tyler Motte

Not everyone thought Tyler Motte was ready for the NHL.

Motte’s college coach certainly didn’t think he was prepared to make the jump. Longtime Michigan coach Red Berenson believed Motte was making a mistake by departing school last spring after his junior season to sign with the Chicago Blackhawks. The 76-year-old Berenson, who is in his 33rd season with the Wolverines, thought Motte would have benefited from a final collegiate season.

“No, we weren’t [in agreement],” Berenson said by phone this week. “I thought he still had some growing to do in his game like everyone does and he’s still a young kid.
