Brent Sopel felt compelled to share his story.
He didn't do it for himself, but for others. Beyond that, he wasn’t sure what would follow.
Sopel, a retired NHL player, had spent four months writing and coordinating a 5,000-plus word story for The Players’ Tribune. He was going to share his life's struggles, including unknowingly dealing with dyslexia and admittedly finding solace in alcohol. He was making a lot of very private details very public.
On March 7, the day the story was to publish, Sopel could feel his nerves spike. These were different different than the ones he got playing for the Blackhawks for a Stanley Cup.
