There’s a story everyone loves to tell about Wendell Young.
Young was the Chicago Wolves’ No. 1 goaltender as they were pursuing the Turner Cup in the IHL in 1998. Amidst their playoff run, Young dislocated his shoulder in Game 1 of the championship round and wasn’t able to play again.
The Wolves fought on without him. But when they encountered some adversity and fell behind 3-2 to the Detroit Vipers in the Turner Cup Finals series, Wolves management turned to Young and asked a favor. Would he be willing to suit up, sit on the bench and just be there as a leader for his teammates?
