Flyers' Chris VandeVelde suspended two games for elbowing Jonathan Toews

Philadelphia Flyers forward Chris VandeVelde was suspended two games for elbowing Jonathan Toews in the Blackhawks’ 3-2 loss to the Flyers on Wednesday night.

The Department of Player Safety, in its video explanation of the suspension, said VandeVelde “is in control of this play from the start. This is not a high-speed play in which the speed or sudden movement of both players dramatically increased the force or otherwise altered the outcome of the hit. In attempting to overtake Toews, VandeVelde mistimes his hit, lunges and extends his elbow in an attempt to get a piece of his opponent and catches Toews directly in the jaw.
