Blessed with the skills of stars such as Sidney Crosby, Evgeni Malkin, Kris Letang and Phil Kessel, the Penguins aren't strangers to highlight reel passing leading to instant offense.
Yet, 10 games into the 2017-18 campaign, the Penguins' unofficial “pass of the season” might belong to an undrafted journeyman defenseman from San Diego.
During the Penguins' 5-4 road loss to the Lightning, Oct. 12, Chad Ruhwedel calmly collected a rebound off a save by former goaltender Antti Niemi, looked up ice and flung a tape-to-tape pass between Lightning defenseman Dan Girardi and Mikhail Sergachev to Conor Sheary.
