BUFFALO, N.Y. – Finding ways to stay under the salary cap in recent years has cost the Chicago Blackhawks some of their core players.
On Friday, it cost them Andrew Shaw, a two-time Stanley Cup champion.
The Blackhawks traded Shaw to the Montreal Canadiens for two 2016 second-round picks at No. 39 and 45 overall.
Shaw and the Blackhawks had hoped to negotiate a new contract, but talks broke off between Blackhawks general manager Stan Bowman and agent Pat Brisson without a new deal prior to the opening of the NHL draft on Friday, according to a source.
