At long last, the marquee at Wrigley Field is lit up with the words “World Series Champions” for the Chicago Cubs.
The Cubs defeated the Cleveland Indians 8-7 in Game 7 to win the 2016 World Series on Wednesday night at Cleveland’s Progressive Field, ending the franchise’s 108-year drought. In addition to halting the longest title drought in baseball, the Cubs became the first club to overcome a 3-1 Series deficit since the 1985 Kansas City Royals, who defeated a certain baseball team from St. Louis.
Chicago Blackhawks Chairman Rocky Wirtz released a statement Thursday morning on the Cubs winning the World Series.
