SOUTH BEND, Ind. – The Blackhawks may have Scotty Bowman to thank for a future NHL defenseman.
It was Bowman, who is Blackhawks general manager Stan Bowman’s father and a Blackhawks senior advisor, who originally brought defenseman Dennis Gilbert to the organization’s attention.
“He’s a Buffalo kid,” Blackhawks amateur scouting vice president Mark Kelley said of Gilbert. “It’s funny because one of the first times I heard of him was from Scotty. Scotty knew of him, knew of the family at a younger age. He kind of mentioned his name early in his underage years. So, I think that’s when we kind of put him on the radar.
