Ab McDonald, who helped the Chicago Blackhawks win the Stanley Cup in 1961, died Tuesday night. He was 82.
McDonald, whose given name was Alvin, started his career with the Montreal Canadiens in the 1957-58 season. He won three straight Stanley Cups with the Canadiens before joining Chicago in a multi-player trade. The Winnipeg native replaced Ted Lindsay on the Hawks’ famous “Scooter Line” with linemates Stan Mikita and Ken Wharram. McDonald scored 17 goals and 33 points in his first season with Chicago as the team won the 1961 Stanley Cup.
