Last spring, Brooke Webster was ready to hang up her skates for good. After four years playing for St. Lawrence University's Division I women's program, the 22-year-old had no plans to pursue a further career in hockey.
Then she heard about an opportunity to play in China.
“I was like, ‘I really have nothing to lose, I love hockey and it’s an awesome experience getting to grow the game globally.’ I just figured I’d do it, and it’s been really fun so far,” said the forward, who is one of nine North Americans on the Vanke Rays, one of two Canadian Women's Hockey League expansion teams based in China.
