Tigers to interview Fredi Gonzalez for managerial opening

The Tigers will interview Fredi Gonzalez on Thursday for their 2018 managerial vacancy, a source confirmed to The Athletic.

The news that the Tigers contacted the Marlins to gain permission to speak with Gonzalez was first reported Sunday night by MLB.com's Joe Frisaro.

Gonzalez, 53, served as the third base coach for the Marlins in 2017, with the team finishing the season 77-85.

The Cuban-born Gonzalez has ten years of managerial experience at the Major League level. He previously managed for five-plus seasons with the Atlanta Braves from 2011-16 — he finished in the top five for BBWAA voting three times during that span — and prior to that, Gonzalez held the top job for the Marlins from 2007-10.
