Ryan Pace says board ‘didn’t align for us’ after again failing to draft QB

Five years ago last month, Bears general manager Ryan Pace was asked his philosophy about drafting quarterbacks. He said it was “a good idea” to bring in a new passing prospect every year, be it through the draft or college free agency.

By the end of Saturday’s draft, through, here are the totals: in 42 rounds, Pace has drafted exactly one quarterback — Mitch Trubisky in 2017.

Trubisky’s struggles last year forced the Bears to give up a fourth-round pick to the Jaguars for Nick Foles, who will make at least $24 million with the Bears. Pace again refused to say whether the Bears will pick up Trubisky’s fifth-year option, due May 4, which would pay him more than $24 million in 2021.
