Defensive end Nick Williams and running back David Montgomery have been named winners of the Brian Piccolo Award — a particularly poignant honor on the 50th anniversary of Piccolo’s death in 1970.
The award, cherished by the McCaskey family and particularly Virginia McCaskey, is voted on by Bears teammates, honoring a rookie and veteran player they feel best exemplifies the courage, loyalty, teamwork, dedication and sense of humor of the late Brian Piccolo, a Bears running back who died at 26 from embryonal cell carcinoma on June 16, 1970.
“It’s a blessing to receive the Piccolo Award,” Montgomery said in a statement released by the Bears.
