NFL’s franchise tag is another way to separate athletes and fans

Bears receiver Alshon Jeffery met the media Tuesday at Halas Hall, smiling a lot and saying very little. It reminded me of something my five-year-old son said to me the other day: “Sometimes people smile when they’re nervous.”

Was Jeffery nervous meeting a media horde that he knew was going to hammer him on missing all of the team’s offseason activities or did he just think the whole thing was funny, you know, a bunch of goofy reporters in polo shirts telling him how to work out?

Jeffery stayed away from the Bears this offseason surely for bargaining reasons with a mix of contract-related caution.
