After weeks of uncertainty and fear their season would be cancelled, Hockey Canada granted hundreds of minor hockey players a reprieve on Friday, offering a one-year deferral on sweeping changes meant to reshape how children are exposed to the game.
The decision affects children aged six and under, and registered in select hockey, which is in addition to their regular houseleague schedule. In March, Hockey Canada had announced every player in that age group would, beginning this season, have to play all games cross-ice — rather than the more traditional full ice games.
Many minor hockey associations across the country have already adopted the model, which has been a part of Hockey Canada's development plan for decades.
