According to Larry Mayer, the team’s lead writer on their website, the Chicago Bears will honor Hall Of Fame running back Gale Sayers this Sunday in their game against the Green Bay Packers. Sayers died earlier this year on September 23 at the age of 77.
The Bears will stencil a circle on the field that features his retired jersey number (40) and his last name.
Sayers, a first-round pick of the Bears (4th overall) in the 1965 NFL Draft and a first-round pick of the Kansas City Chiefs (5th overall) in the 1965 AFL Draft, was named First-Team All-Pro in each of his first five years in Chicago.
