Bears rookie Teven Jenkins is having back surgery Tuesday, coach Matt Nagy said, with hopes that the tackle can return to the team this season.
It’s a major blow to a team that traded up to draft Jenkins with plans of him playing left tackle.
The Bears were aware that Jenkins had back issues in college but he has symptoms that Nagy called “new” since his tenure with the pro team began.
“The goal is to get him back here this year,” he said.
The Bears traded up to draft Jenkins in the second round and immediately cut reliable veteran Charles Leno.
