There’s a lot of things to like about Derek Carr. He’s a steady QB with a good contract. His cap hit would cost the Bears less than $20 million for the next 3 years with very little dead cap money. He’s still young as he’ll turn 29 before the 2020 NFL Season. Carr is presently an upgrade from Bears’ starting QB Mitch Trubisky.
Trading for Derek Carr has some negatives as well. He’s seemingly flat-lined as an NFL QB after a breakout 2016 season. The Bears have just over $13 million in cap space so they would have to make some roster cuts just to make financial room for Carr. A Derek Carr trade is going to cost at least one draft pick if not more. Chicago doesn’t have first round pick or picks in Rounds 3 & 4. Do the Bears want to sacrifice more draft capital & cap space for a player of Derek Carr’s stature?
3 Reasons To Trade For Derek Carr:
- Carr has a team-friendly contract
- Carr’s better than Mitch Trubisky
- Carr is still young (28 years old)
3 Reasons To Not Trade For Derek Carr:
- Bears lack major cap space ($13.4 million)
- Has Carr hit his ceiling?
- Bears have limited draft capital
