Why the Player of the Year award must go to Chelsea midfielder N'Golo Kante

It was, everyone agreed, one of Eden Hazard's finest performances of the season. That's some competition but his shift against Manchester United went beyond a purely dazzling repertoire of skill and invention. There was bravery, too.

Hazard knew what game Manchester United were playing, with their systemic attempts to thwart and intimidate. The plan was to render Chelsea's most creative player ineffective, by fair means or foul.

It was going to be a bruising, painful encounter. Yet Hazard refused to be cowed. Never stopped demanding the ball, never stopped making himself available for more punishment. And, ultimately, he won.
