Red cards used to be few and far between in the Women’s Super League. Players could quite happily fly into tackles, usually without being punished.
In 132 games across the 2022-23 campaign, there were just eight red cards. It was the same number over the same amount of games in the previous season.
There needed to be a stronger approach, that was clear. But we have now gone from one extreme to the other. After just 12 games this season, we have already had four red cards.
Three of them have been for Manchester City and two came during their 1-1 draw at home to Chelsea on Sunday.
