Chelsea's strategy of spending vast sums on potential rather than ready-made stars hasn’t been done before. We won’t know the final outcome this season but it does carry risk, on and off the pitch.
I’ll start with the positives. It’s refreshing for clubs to genuinely look longer-term. I don’t think owner Todd Boehly expects Chelsea to be challenging for the title this season.
In Mauricio Pochettino, they have the perfect manager to develop young talent. Despite the £860million spent, he has been their best signing.
However you can’t ignore the huge gamble the club are taking.
