Andy Carroll has had surgery on a hairline fracture of his foot and will be out for around eight weeks.
The West Ham striker saw a specialist on Monday morning in the hope he could avoid surgery but it was decided rehabilitation without an operation would be too much of a risk.
The injury put paid to the 29-year-old's hopes of a move to Chelsea with Antonio Conte eager to sign him on an initial loan.
Carroll suffered the injury against West Bromwich Albion when his two goals secured a vital win and he then made a brief substitute appearance against Tottenham.
