There is one thing that can be said about Frank Lampard and his relationship with Chelsea. He’s a legend. The things that he accomplished while he was at the club puts him up as one of the greatest players in the club’s history, and arguably the greatest in the last 30 years. After a season managing Derby County, one of the biggest clubs in the Championship, it looks like he could be coming home after Sarri moved on to Juventus. But, why would he be the right man to take us forward at this moment in time?
There is a lot of buzz
After a season of bad feeling, despite there being a modicum of success, and the uncertainty that is currently facing the club in terms of transfer plans, some stability and good feeling is required. Already the odds on a top four finish have tumbled. The bookies think that Lampard is the favorite to be the next manager and he certainly would be the favorite amongst the fans. In fact, almost every bookmaker listed on our favorite review sites have Frank Lampard down as the most likely to be the next Chelsea manager. By installing Frank, it could lead to the odds on finishing in the top four falling again, so it would be worth placing your wagers before he has got the job.
This has understandably created some excitement amongst our fans, with the return of Frank being almost at the top of everyone’s wish list. It has also lead to Frank’s uncle, Harry Redknapp, speaking out about his return. Redknapp is of the opinion that Frank will return to Chelsea as manager and be a success too. The reason Redknapp believes in Frank so much isn’t just because he’s family, but because the situation at Chelsea is very similar to the one he had at Derby.
The parallels mean that Frank is ready
Last season at Derby, Frank was tasked with bringing down the wage bill and the average age of the Derby side. With very little to spend he set about building a younger and cheaper side to take a stab at making the playoffs. He used young players already at the club and brought in young talent from outside the club to supplement what was already there. This is very similar to what Frank will have to do at Chelsea.
Because there is a possible transfer ban in place, it means that whoever is manager will have to rely on the players already at the club. This includes a large amount of young talent that has either been playing in the youth teams or playing out on loan. Frank will have the experience from managing at Derby to come in and do the job in the Premier League. Added to this the talent on offer at Chelsea is significantly higher than at Derby and he has had a year of working with Mason Mount already.
Bringing in Frank Lampard will be the perfect way to stabilize during this unsteady period. Once he has stabilized the club and got the young players used to playing in his way, he will be able to move Chelsea forward to challenge for the title once again. This time, with a young and vibrant side that bleeds Chelsea!
